The Gospel in 5 Verses: A Simple Outline You Can Share Anywhere
A five-verse gospel outline from Romans you can learn in an afternoon and share in five minutes, with a plain-language explanation of each verse.
Most people who want to share their faith freeze for one reason: they are not sure what to say. A memorized outline removes that fear. The one below uses five verses from Romans — often called the Romans Road — and takes about five minutes to walk through. Learn the references, learn one sentence for each, and you can share the gospel on a bus, at a kitchen table or on a doorstep.
1. Everyone has sinned — Romans 3:23
"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God."
Say: God's standard is His own perfection, and none of us meet it. Not the religious, not the irreligious — all of us. This is not an insult; it is the diagnosis that makes the rest make sense.
Ask: "Would you agree that none of us is perfect?" Almost everyone says yes.
2. Sin has a cost — Romans 6:23
"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."
Say: Wages are what you earn. What sin earns is death — separation from God, now and forever. But notice the second half of the verse: God offers a gift instead. A gift is not earned.
Ask: "What's the difference between a wage and a gift?"
3. God acted first — Romans 5:8
"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."
Say: God did not wait for us to clean up. While we were still sinners, Jesus died in our place, taking the death our sin earned. This is the center of the gospel: a substitute.
Ask: "Has anyone ever taken a punishment for you?" Let them tell the story; then point to the cross.
4. Our response — Romans 10:9
"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved."
Say: Two things: believe that Jesus died and rose again, and confess Him as Lord — put Him in charge. Not a ritual, not a performance. Trust and surrender.
Ask: "Is there anything stopping you from trusting Jesus today?"
5. The promise — Romans 10:13
"For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."
Say: Whosoever. No exceptions, no waiting period, no qualifying round. If you call on Him, He saves you.
Invite: "Would you like to call on Him right now?" If yes, lead a short prayer in their own words: admitting sin, trusting Christ's death and resurrection, asking Him to be Lord. Then tell them what just happened (see Romans 10:13 again) and set a time to talk in the next two days.
Practical tips
- Learn it out loud. Say the five references and your five sentences to a friend until they come without thinking.
- Let them read. Hand over your Bible or phone and have them read the verse aloud. People argue with you; they rarely argue with the text.
- Stop when they stop. If someone is not ready, leave them with Romans 10:13 and your number. A conversation that ends well can continue; one that is forced usually cannot.
- Write down what happened. Name, date, where you were, where they stopped. If they said yes, follow-up starts now — see the first 30 days.
